I often ask client’s to assess their anxiety with a few questions:
“Is what you’re feeling based on fear or fact?”
“Are you in danger or uncomfortable?”
“Is discomfort a bad thing?
“Are physical symptoms dangerous?” (Spoiler: they are not!)
Panic is one of those experiences that can feel extremely alarming. Often, an individual experiences physical symptoms and feels as though they might lose control, have a heart attack, or “go crazy.” (There are many reasons, too, that physical symptoms occur, as outlined in this article..) The fact is that panic is not dangerous and it is also very treatable. Through treatment and loads of self-compassion, you can train your brain to regard panic as an uncomfortable (and yes, annoying) experience, but not one that is dangerous and/or to be feared!
