Despite the increasing progress in social attitudes towards LGBTQ individuals, teens in particular are still reporting high levels of anxiety and depression. According to a study done by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, a large number of LGBTQ teens struggle with feelings of rejection, self-esteem issues, and fear for their safety, particularly in their school environment. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) has shared a short informative webinar with statistical information about this population and their struggles with anxiety, depression, and suicide, as well as suggestions on what their support systems can do about it. https://adaa.org/webinar/professional/anxiety-and-depression-lgbtq-youth-what-do-we-know-and-how-can-we-help
Expectedly, the home environment in particular, and how parents respond to these teens opening up (or not) about their sexuality and gender concerns is detrimental to their levels of self-acceptance and confidence. Families can support their teens by communicating in a non-judgmental way, modeling acceptance of differences, and reassuring them that they are loved and safe. Please take some time to watch this webinar, and if you believe that your teen is struggling with some of these concerns, it is highly beneficial to encourage them to see a mental health professional.
