Meet Julie Horning, M.S.Ed

Julie Horning
Virtual Wilmette

Julie Horning earned her Master’s Degree in School and Community Counseling at DePaul University and her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Knox College. She brings extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults from her over a decade working as a school counselor at a Chicago Public High School. In her time there, she worked with both adolescents and their care-givers in group and individual settings. She is passionate about helping clients find comfort and safety in the therapy space, whether this is their first experience or they are returning to care. She views the therapeutic process as a collaborative one and takes a client-centered approach in identifying goals and ensuring clients feel success along the journey.

As a mom of two young children, Julie also personally understands the challenges that both children and their caregivers face, and the benefits that therapy can offer to navigating those. From her previous experience, she developed her passion for utilizing trauma-informed care and other strength-based practices, including mindfulness techniques, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help clients reflect on their past experiences and utilize them to live the future they aspire to. She has experience working with clients struggling with ADHD, anxiety, depression, eating-disorders, and OCD, along with a variety of other issues that arise from life’s complexities.

When she isn’t working, you can usually find Julie on the move- walking her dog, on a jog, or chasing her children. She is also an avid reader and enjoys curling up with a good book at the end of the night.

My therapist is an extremely good listener and has provided me with excellent tools to improve my overall mental health.
