Anxiety Disorders

Am I having a panic attack?

By Debra Kissen

Are you currently experiencing an intense period of fear, discomfort or terror?

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms, which appeared to come on β€œout of the blue”?:

  • Palpitations or accelerated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Sensations of shortness of breath
  • Feelings of choking
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling dizzy, lightheaded or faint
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Feelings of unreality or feelings of not really being there
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Fear of dying

If you answered yes to four or more of these symptoms, you may be experiencing a Panic Attack.

If you are having a panic attack, this is simply a false alarm going off in your brain and while the sensations are uncomfortable, they are not dangerous. Β A panic attack will always pass on its own. Β All you need to do is let go of the fight with anxiety. Β Let the panic wash over you like a wave and this moment will soon fade into the next. Β You are safe and sound.
