RESEARCH SUMMARY:

The Effectiveness of CBT in Clients Diagnosed with Anxiety or Related Disorders

STUDY OVERVIEW:

This study examined the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in reducing anxiety symptoms and the role of motivation in treatment success.

RESEARCHER:

Aveen Sharma, PsyD, Adler University (May 19, 2023)

KEY FINDINGS

  • CBT is highly effective in reducing anxiety symptoms, with the greatest improvements occurring within the first 90 days of treatment

  • Motivation impacts therapy outcomes—clients with high motivation (self-rated 6 or higher) showed faster symptom reduction, were more engaged in therapy, and attended more sessions.

  • Virtual & hybrid therapy formats are effective—no significant difference in treatment outcomes between virtual, hybrid, and in-person CBT.

  • Importance of continued treatment beyond 90 days—early discontinuation of services may prevent clients from experiencing the full benefits of CBT treatment.
