Separation anxiety is an excessive display of fear and distress when faced with situations of separation from the home or from a specific attachment figure (i.e., parent, caregiver).
Symptoms
- Developmentally inappropriate anxiety caused by separation from primary care givers
- Persistent worry about harm to or loss of primary givers
- Frequent avoidance of activities that require separation from primary care givers
- Separation anxiety may be associated with complaints of physical symptoms of headaches or tummy aches when required to separate from primary care givers
