Relaxing can be difficult for people with anxiety and this research explains the possible reasoning behind this phenomenon. Anxiously worrying about a possible negative outcome acts as a defense mechanism by preparing you for the worst which makes it difficult to relax. We think that if we “prepare for the worst” then if the worst happens we won’t feel as bad. This can lead us to not fully experience the joyful moments of life. Next time you find yourself preparing for the worst, try reminding yourself that you will cope with the future as it comes, but right now, you want to be fully present.
