As humans, we naturally want to move away from emotions and thoughts that make us uncomfortable. Who wants to feel sadness? Who wants to feel anxiety? I do not think many people would answer YES, bring on the uncomfortable emotions! The caveat is, though, emotions signal something to us. Emotions are like messengers. For example, sadness can signal that we cared about something or someone, anxiety can protect us from danger, anger can let us know we have been wronged. Moving away from uncomfortable emotions does not work and often time put us farther away from our goals and values. Learning to sit with and simple notice anxiety, sadness, and other emotions many humans find uncomfortable is key to living a fulfilling life.
