Ask Light On Anxiety

Am I doing something because of OCD?

Question:

I am confused about distinguishing what is “normal behavior” and what is OCD. I see this type of behavior in her daughter constantly in the office as well.

Light On Anxiety Answer:

In differentiating between OCD behaviors and one’s “true self”, it is helpful to note  if one feels compelled/that they must engage in a behavior versus something one is CHOOSING to do and if they had to postpone doing they would be able to tolerate that.

The behavior in enough itself is not a problem. Washing your hands is not a problem … running is not a problem … confessing to unkind actions is not a problem. It is just when one feels that they must engage in certain behaviors in rigid, frequent,  life interfering ways that it becomes more and more OCD like.
